A Collection of decorated papers, ca 1770-1840

A lovely collection of whole sheets of Italian decorated paper. These sheets were produced during the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, through the old technique known as woodblock printing.

Decorated paper was widely produced in Italy between the 17th and the 19th centuries. Its production flourished especially during the second half of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century. In this period, ca. 1770s-1840s, the Remondini family in Bassano del Grappa, Veneto, became the largest Italian producer of decorated paper and popular prints. Decorated papers, in several hundreds of colour combinations and different patterns, were crafted mainly through the process of woodblock printing, while popular prints were usually produced through copper engraving and etching.

All the leaves are pretty much the same standard size for whole sheets of this kind. They measure between a maximum of ca. 480x370cm and a minimum of ca. 450x340cm.
